Purpose of Classification:
Lead observer directing and coordinating activities of on shift personnel. Assists visiting astronomers in obtaining high quality observational data. Provides technical, scientific and logistical support to visiting astronomers before, during, and after their observing runs a the telescope, including assistance with data analysis. Performs general and specific commissioning of the telescope and instruments. Conducts astronomical research.
Standard Duties:
Lead operation of ARC telescopes and coordinates on-site staff and outside resources as needed. Reports to collaboration present status of operations and plans. Develops and implements procedures and tools for improved survey operations. Organizes and directs technical staff to best utilize skills and talent to address scientific interests. Observe with ARC facilities and maintains operational proficiency. Develops, plans, and implements monthly engineering test scenarios. Participates and presents at various project meetings at remote locations. Provides daily and long term technical and scheduling direction to others.

University and department policies and procedures; principles and practices of organization and administration; telescopes and observational astrophysics; astronomical research.
Short- and long-term range planning; problem analysis and resolution; public contact; communication, organization and management skills.
Direct, evaluate, train and supervise the work of assigned personnel; communicate effectively in written and oral form; develop and maintain effective working relationships; maintain accurate and orderly records; use independent judgment and initiative; organize and direct several activities; analyze and evaluate information.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- Doctorate degree in related field.
   Experience- Three (3) years of professional experience related to the standard duties as outlined.
