Purpose of Classification:
Provides pharmacy services to patients and medical practitioners. Fills prescriptions, dispenses medicines, counsels patients and medical practitioners regarding the nature and use of drugs. Prepares and maintains all necessary records on prescriptions, patient charges, and inventory.
Standard Duties:
Prepares and/or oversees the preparation and dispensing of prescription medications to patients or medical practitioners; makes decisions regarding generic substitution of prescribed pharmaceuticals. Counsels patients and/or medical practitioners on drug indications/contraindications, dosage, drug interactions, and side effects; provides other drug and pharmaceutical information as appropriate. Oversees the acquisition and disbursement of drugs and medications. Establishes and maintains methods and manner of storage and recordkeeping systems to provide for safekeeping of pharmaceuticals. Follows established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of drugs and their indications, contraindications, dosing, side effects, and proper administration. Knowledge of clinical operations and procedures. Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements. Knowledge of policies and regulations pertaining to the disbursement of pharmaceutical drugs. Knowledge of patient care charts and patient histories.
Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards. Ability to supervise and train assigned staff. Ability to perform basic patient assessments and referrals. Ability to design and implement systems necessary to collect, maintain, and analyze data. Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- Doctorate degree in related field.
   Experience- No previous work experience required.
   Equivalency- None
   Certifications/License- State of New Mexico Licensed Pharmacist.
