Purpose of Classification:
Under minimal supervision, manages the operations of a pharmacy within a patient care facility. Develops and implements policy and procedure and supervises pharmacy staff. Provides direction and advice to health professionals as a highly-specialized practitioner.
Standard Duties:
Oversees all facets of the daily operations of the organizational unit, ensuring compliance with the University, state, and federal laws, policies, and regulations. Develops annual operating budgets and provides fiscal direction to the unit. Develops or assists with the development and implementation of policies and procedures consistent with those of the organization to ensure efficient and safe operation of the unit. Prepares and/or oversees preparation and dispensing of prescription medications to patients or medical practitioners; makes decisions regarding appropriate generic substitution of prescribed pharmaceuticals. Counsels patients and/or medical practitioners on drug indications or contraindications, dosage and administration, drug interactions, and side effects; provides other drug and pharmaceutical information as appropriate. Advises medical practitioners on various aspects of prescribing through meetings, newsletters, and other forms of verbal and written communication. Develops and implements systems and processes to establish and maintain records for the operating unit. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of budgeting, cost estimating, and fiscal management principles and procedures.
Skill in the use of computers, preferably in a PC, Windows-based operating environment. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications. Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities. Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to clearly communicate medical information to professional practitioners and/or the general public. Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- Doctorate degree in related field.
   Experience- Five (5) years of professional experience directly related to the standard duties as outlined.
   Equivalency- None
   Certifications/License- State of New Mexico Licensed Pharmacist.
