Purpose of Classification:
Manages the care and maintenance of the grounds and associated facilities of a University golf course. Establishes and implements grounds development and maintenance goals, policies, and procedures, and ensures adherence to all relevant regulations, guidelines, and standards for golf course upkeep.
Standard Duties:
Oversees all facets of the daily operations of the organizational unit, ensuring compliance with the University, state, and federal laws, policies, and regulations. Oversees the supervision of personnel, which includes work allocation, training, promotion and enforcement of internal procedures and controls, and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance. Develops annual operating budgets and provides fiscal direction to the unit. Develops policies and procedures for the establishment and maintenance of golf course grounds and facilities, and coordinates the implementation of turf development and management procedures, in accordance with policies and established NCAA tournament standards, as appropriate. Establishes and manages inventories of golf course grounds keeping equipment, facilities, and supplies, and monitors their cost-effective utilization. Manages and reviews irrigation systems performance and initiates changes when necessary. Develops and implements systems to maintain records and/or inventories on equipment, employees, facilities, and/or maintenance activities. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of turf propagation techniques. Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations, guidelines, and standards in area of expertise. Knowledge of manual and/or computerized irrigation systems. Knowledge of golf course maintenance activities to include placement of tees and pins, irrigation techniques, and turf care. Knowledge of pest management principles, techniques, agents, and equipment. Knowledge of budgeting, cost estimating, and fiscal management principles and procedures. Knowledge of cost control principles and practices. Knowledge of grounds keeping and turf maintenance equipment and facilities. Strong computer skills, to include database management, word processing, spread sheeting, e-mail, and the internet. Knowledge of faculty and/or staff hiring procedures.
Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications. Records maintenance skills. Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities. Employee development and performance management skills.
Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures. Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments. Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- Bachelor's degree in a related field.
   Experience- Five (5) years of experience directly related to the standard duties as outlined.
   Equivalency- Any equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience as approved by Human Resource Services.
   Certifications/License- Certification by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America; Pesticide Public Applicators License, categories 3A and 3B, NM Department of Agriculture
