Purpose of Classification:
Oversees the institution's scientific research. Responsibilities typically include research policy, sponsored-research administration (Grants and Contracts), compliance with regulations pertaining to research. Works with VP Economic Development on technology transfer and commercialization of intellectual property (patents) and research communications.
Standard Duties:
Responsible for university research portfolio including strategic planning, resource allocation, identifying opportunities, creating and providing environment for innovation, development and creation of scholarly work, adopt policies and procedures to provide assistance to researchers while remaining compliant with federal regulations. Oversees the functions of research centers, institutes, and common use research facilities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge and understanding of principles, procedures, regulations, and standards applicable to the job. Understanding of the University's mission, vision and goals.
Short- and long-term planning; problem analysis and resolution; report preparation and presentation; interpersonal and organizational communication, both oral and written.
Develop and maintain effective working relationships; maintain accurate and orderly records; use independent judgment and initiative; organize and direct activities.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- Doctorate degree in related field.
   Experience- Five (5) years of increasingly responsible management experience in the area of research management. Applicants are expected to hold the rank of full professor with tenure and have national recognition as a scholar. • A strong record of publications in peer reviewed journals; • Experience as Principal Investigator/director of federally funded research and contracts, ideally in both individual and collaborative teams; • A record of competitive funding experience with major government agencies such as NSF, NIH, DOD, USDA or others; • Experience serving on federal funding agency review panels; • Experience developing and/or advocating for a research vision within her/his institution; • Experience and expertise in managing grants and research teams.
   Equivalency- None
   Certifications/License- US Citizenship required. The successful candidate will be expected to obtain a personnel security clearance through The Department of Defense.
