Purpose of Classification:
Reporting to the President, the special advisor acts as a primary contributor to university direction. The special advisor evaluates institutional strengths and weaknesses, assesses challenges and opportunities, develops and synthesizes information, advises potential investments, spearheads initiatives, examines productivity and benchmarks performance. The special advisor assists the President in prioritizing actions of greatest value and positioning NMSU to advance academic outcomes and prominence.
Standard Duties:
Gathers and synthesizes information. Uncovers and shares meaningful and actionable insights. Identifies areas of opportunity and initiatives for the institution. Advances institutional impact through innovative and proactive approaches. Prepares reports, presentations and materials. Leads projects. Identifies goals, solutions, strategies, tasks, resources, timeline, budget and status. Shares critical information and effectively engages university community. Mines data, surfaces trends, models scenarios and evaluates outcomes. Assesses budget, resources, research, academic programming and student success. Analyzes and benchmarks performance and productivity against peers. Provides recommendations which align resources and investments to objectives. Examines business processes, promotes best practices and effectuates improvement. Advances strategic priorities and decision-making. Recommends budget measures and resource allocation. Advises policy and performance management strategies. Acts as a liaison to university community and constituents. Prepares communications and correspondence. Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge and understanding of principles, procedures, regulations, and standards applicable to the job. Understanding of the System’s mission, vision and goals. Knowledge of New Mexico laws and regulations applicable to public institutions of higher education.
Short- and long-term strategy development and planning; problem analysis and resolution; report preparation and presentation; interpersonal and organizational communication, both oral and written.
Develop and maintain effective working relationships; maintain accurate and orderly records; use independent judgment and initiative; organize and direct activities. Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with individuals at all levels of the institution and the larger diverse community. Ability to assess a wide variety of complex institutional topics and recommend innovative solutions. Ability to hypothesize and draw conclusions using data. Ability to exercise good judgment in politicized environments.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- Bachelor’s degree in business, economics, mathematics, statistics, engineering, computer science, public administration, education, public policy, political science, data science or related field.
   Experience- Ten (10) years of higher education professional experience directly related to the standard duties as outlined.
