Purpose of Classification: | |
Designs, modifies, repairs, and installs a variety of broadcasting equipment to ensure the quality of on-air operations. Ensures broadcasting equipment functions within FCC regulations. | |
Standard Duties: | |
Oversees and coordinates the installation and maintenance of the station's statewide transmission network. Plans, implements, and oversees procedures for the operation and maintenance of studio, remote control, and RF transmission equipment. Performs and/or coordinates activities concerned with the layout and design of electrical circuitry, to ensure conformance with appropriate codes and safety regulations. Designs and implements computer documentation software for remote transmitter and satellite systems. Plans and oversees transmission construction projects, to include development and upgrades; monitors and coordinates the work of outside contractors engaged in construction projects, as appropriate. Acts as a source of technical advice and consultation to internal and external individuals and agencies on associated technical and operational issues. Leads, guides, and trains staff, students, and/or interns, engaged in broadcast related activities. Maintains and verifies all necessary records, logs, and reports required by FCC and local and state agencies. Troubleshoots RF transmission equipment to component level, and effects repairs as appropriate; provides a variety of alternative solutions to complex transmission problems, and advises and assists in the implementation of solutions. Maintains current knowledge of state-of-the-art transmission technology, equipment, and procedures, to ensure the continued efficient and cost-effective operation of the station's broadcast transmission facilities. Works a flexible schedule on a regular basis, to include weekend shifts as assigned; maintains an on-call availability on a rotating basis. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. | |
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: | |
Knowledge of broadcast systems circuitry design and/or installation. Knowledge of current technological developments/trends in area of expertise. Knowledge of FCC and other federal, state and local broadcasting regulations. | |
Organizing and coordinating skills. Records maintenance skills. Technical problem solving skills within area of specialty. | |
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to coordinate and/or supervise independent contractors. Ability to design, install, operate, maintain, and troubleshoot and/or repair television Radio-Frequency (RF) broadcast equipment. Ability to provide technical training to staff and/or students in area of expertise. Ability to test systems and/or operations in compliance with published regulation, guidelines, and/or standards. Ability to work a flexible schedule on a regular basis. Ability to write and prepare computer software, technical documentation, and procedures in area of specialty. | |
Minimum Qualifications: | |
Education- High School diploma or GED certificate. | |
Experience- Ten (10) years of increasingly progressive management experience in one or more areas that report to this position. | |
Equivalency- Completion of a post-secondary degree or certificate may substitute for years of experience. | |
Certifications/License- FCC First Class license | |
