Purpose of Classification:
Installs and maintains the many mechanical, electrical and electronic components, such as motors, compressors, pumps, fans, ducts, pipes, thermostats and switches that are part of heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration systems. Maintains, diagnoses, and corrects problems throughout the entire system using special tools and test equipment.
Standard Duties:
Performs troubleshooting and repair of building distribution systems including low pressure steam distribution, heat exchangers, hot and cold deck systems, air handlers, and pneumatic and digital controls; Performs HVAC system inspections and manufacturer-recommended preventive maintenance; Performs major component replacement work in conjunction with central energy management and control system operators; Performs seasonal overhauls and instructs repair teams in transition of systems from heating to cooling and vice versa; Monitors and adjusts system set points and output using remote computer links to the building’s programmable logic controls; Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices; Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of HVAC installation, troubleshooting, repair and maintenance; Knowledge of refrigerant recovery; Working knowledge of HVAC and associated systems employing computer-based monitoring and control devices; Knowledge of mechanical equipment, plumbing, utilities, distribution systems, and controls, including maintenance and troubleshooting.
Should have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade; Ability to perform preventive maintenance according to published guidelines; Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures; Ability to repair and/or replace building mechanical systems components, including programmable logic controls; Ability to use computer-based monitoring and control devices in maintaining and troubleshooting HVAC systems.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- High School diploma or GED certificate.
   Experience- None
   Equivalency- None
   Certifications/License- Possession of a valid unrestricted driver’s license is a requirement for this job. Must possess a New Mexico Journeyman’s Refrigeration License. Must possess an EPA Universal Refrigerant Handler Card.
