Purpose of Classification:
Under general supervision, responsible for the preparation of various surfaces and the application of paints, enamels, stains, shellac, varnishes, or other finishes using brushes, sprayers, or rollers. Mixes paints and matches colors using proper proportions of pigment, oil, base, and thinner. Must utilize proper painting and finishing application procedures to ensure quality of work.
Standard Duties:
Applies paints, sealers, and solvents to exterior and interior building surfaces such as plaster, sheetrock, concrete, and wood. Performs caulking, finish repair, mud and tape, and texturing tasks. Operates equipment such as airless spray equipment, scaffolding, motorized lifts, and uses mechanized high-reach equipment to renew caulking on exterior building panel seams, windows, and doors. Performs special refinishing tasks including wood surface preparation, staining, and sealing. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices. Performs minor plaster repair, blending newly renovated wall surfaces with existing plaster. Surveys building painting project sites to estimate time and material quantities required; selects appropriate surface coatings. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge and understanding of principles, procedures, regulations, and standards applicable to the job. Understanding of the University's mission, vision and goals.
Skill in selecting and applying paint and associated products. Skill in applying coatings and/or caulking and completing repairs to exterior and interior surfaces. Skill in wood surface preparation, staining, and/or sealing techniques.
Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade. Ability to select, mix, and apply surface coatings which successfully match and/or restore historic interior or exterior surfaces. Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures. Ability to estimate basic project time and material quantity requirements.

   Equivalency-
   Certifications/License- Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
