Purpose of Classification:
Sr technician in metal fabrication and/or welding work. Inspects facilities, plans, and completes metal system repairs.
Standard Duties:
Performs high level sheetmetal or welding layout, fabrication and installation projects. May lead and/or guide the work of lower level sheetmetal or welding technicians in layout, fabrication, and installation of projects. Inspects facilities and surrounding support structures and plans metal system repairs. Prepares drawings and sketches for project fabrication. Estimates, lays out, and selects materials for sheetmetal and/or welding projects. Interprets blueprints for sheet metal fabrication and/or welding projects. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures. Knowledge of ordering job materials and accounting for job labor and material costs.
Skilled in operating equipment used in welding and metal fabrication including band saws, grinders, break, shear, drill press, chop saw, etc.; planning and managing projects; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and adhering to safety practices.
Ability to interpret blueprints and prepare field drawings of structural repairs or proposed modifications. Ability to lead and train staff and/or students. Ability to interpret building blueprints and recommend metal system and/or welding repair and/or modifications. Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures. Ability to perform inspections and make necessary adjustments to conform to job specifications.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- High School diploma or GED certificate.
   Experience- Five (5) years of experience related to the standard duties as outlined.
   Equivalency- Completion of a post-secondary degree or certificate may substitute for years of experience.
   Certifications/License- State of New Mexico or Union Certification as Fully Qualified Structural and Pipe Welder or Sheetmetal Worker.
