Purpose of Classification:
Under direct supervision, performs entry level operation and monitoring of computer equipment and related peripherals. Work includes analyzing potential problems and taking corrective action and reviewing priorities to ensure production schedules are met. Performs routine tasks to maintain computer equipment and their peripherals. Loads peripheral equipment such as tapes and printer paper for operating runs. Job typically does not require exercising independent judgment.
Standard Duties:
Using established procedures and working under immediate supervision, performs task such as: Initializes computer with required system software and operates computer system as directed. Monitors computer and network systems using operating systems utilities; interprets console messages from system software or applications program, and performs required actions. Performs daily backup of systems. Handles input and output media with due care for integrity of data and utility of media for subsequent use. Maintains records required to supplement console log, including problem documentation and actions taken, computer utilization logs, file identification, and similar data. Researches error messages and manipulates console to resequence job steps after a job is interrupted. Maintains applicable records including user lists and equipment inventories. Works on weekend and/or shift rotation schedules. Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. Work is routine and instructions are usually detailed. Little evaluation, originality or ingenuity is required of this classification.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of computer job control procedures. Knowledge of computer input and output media.
Records maintenance skills. Database management skills.
Ability to initialize and operate computer hardware and software systems. Ability to utilize computer operating systems utilities. Knowledge of computer systems backup requirements and procedures. Ability to analyze and solve problems. Ability to document work in progress. Ability to work weekends and/or various shift rotations as required. Ability to determine the nature of computer hardware and systems software problems, and to communicate technical guidance and information to users.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- High School diploma or GED certificate.
   Experience- No previous work experience required.
