Purpose of Classification:
To conduct GIS analysis, plan and implement Geographic Information Systems (GIS) focused program initiative for an identified client-oriented operational entity of the University. Perform activities to support the design, development, and operations of NMWRRI and GIS Laboratories.
Standard Duties:
Supervise, direct, delegate, and evaluate work of assigned staff. Design, develop, maintain, and provide daily management of GIS for funded research projects. Organize and deliver training sessions for project collaborators in use of GIS. Inform department staff and faculty on GIS projects, computer issues, and associated data sets. Consult with graduate students on thesis research related to GIS and associated data sets. Utilize GIS to create intelligent maps and databases for research. Assist project collaborators and students in preparing data for GIS analysis. Prepare progress reports on current projects for clients and departmental records. Answer questions for project collaborators and staff concerning projects, timelines, and budgets. Build Web-based GIS applications.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
University and department policies and procedures; functional & theoretical understanding of geographic information systems, spatial statistics, data base & graphics interaction; knowledge of vector and raster based software & analysis; principles of project supervision; and extensive knowledge of computer hardware. Successful applicant must have detailed knowledge of the use of GIS in natural resource management, transportation, and other applied research areas, and working knowledge of ArcGIS, ArcGIS Server, basic programming skills, Web-scripting, and the use of GPS tools.
Articulation of applied research problems; problem analysis & resolution; leadership, training and education of project staff, with experience of managing teams in the field highly preferred; report preparation; and public presentation.
Direct, evaluate, and supervise applied project work; communicate effectively in written and oral form; develop and maintain effective working relationships; maintain accurate and orderly records; use independent judgment and initiative; organize and direct several activities; and conduct GIS analysis and evaluate output from such analysis.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- Bachelor's degree in a related field.
   Experience- One (1) year of experience related to the standard duties as outlined.
