Purpose of Classification: | |
Assists in the management of the Police Department, to include direct responsibility for the field services functions and all other areas assigned. Acts as the designee of the Chief of Police whenever the Chief is not available. Assists in planning and directing activities relating to campus security. | |
Standard Duties: | |
Provides safety and security for the university community. Handles crisis situations. Instructs and trains department personnel in methods and procedures. Develops policies and procedures as they relate to law enforcement, to the safety and security of students, faculty, and staff, and to traffic regulations. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. | |
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: | |
Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of police protocols, procedures, and methodology. Knowledge of federal legislation and reporting requirements related to university police departments, safety, and emergency management, to include the Clery Act and Title IX. Working knowledge of export control restrictions, industrial access control, and industrial security programs. | |
Demonstrated skill in managing complex criminal and internal investigations. Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures. Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community. Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management. Skill in the use of computers, to include maintenance of computer networks and servers and the installation of police-related software. | |
Ability to develop and deliver presentations. Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals. Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures. Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments. Ability to foster a cooperative work environment and develop employees. Ability to create and lead multi-disciplinary and multi-agency working groups. | |
Minimum Qualifications: | |
Education- Bachelor's degree in a related field. | |
Experience- Ten (10) years of increasingly progressive management experience in one or more areas that report to this position, with at least 3 years experience as a certified officer. | |
Equivalency- None | |
Certifications/License- Current certification by the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy as a police officer. Must be able to receive a federal government security clearance within six (6) months of appointment. | |
