| Purpose of Classification: | |
| Under general supervision, performs a variety of moderately complex technical duties in support of departmental program to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations as well as University policies. Performs technical and support functions for a variety of areas including radiation safety, hazardous waste management, industrial hygiene and occupational safety, receiving and distribution of radioactive materials. Sole support for management of universal wastes for the local campus. Independent judgment in making decisions involving non-routine problems is required. | |
| Standard Duties: | |
| Provides chemical, radioactive, infectious and universal waste collection on campus; interacts with faculty, staff and students on waste issues; sorts waste by compatibility type; assists with packaging, labeling, loading of wastes for shipment. Performs direct handling and comingling of all types of hazardous wastes requiring use of personal protective equipment; assists in response to hazardous materials spills. Participates in annual medical monitoring and frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials; position receives 5% premium pay for hazardous duties. Maintains radioactive and hazardous waste inventory and associated records on databases and spreadsheets; receives, processes and distributes and records radioactive materials arriving on campus; performs inventory review and maintains all associated records required by regulations. Performs contamination surveys of radioisotope laboratories and incoming packages of radioisotopes and sealed radioactive sources; perform leak tests of sealed sources in laboratories and assists with x-ray surveys; analyzes samples using laboratory equipment; calculates results; reports results; assists in decontamination of work areas. Operates specialized equipment required for specific tests such as confined space measurements, chemical exposures, radiation surveys, indoor air quality evaluations; ventilation surveys. Calibrates a wide variety of laboratory, environmental, field monitoring and industrial hygiene equipment. Assists in operations or response to incidents or spills concerning hazardous materials or wastes using this equipment. Obtains technical data for investigations related to air quality complaints. | |
| Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: | |
| Demonstrated professional knowledge and operational expertise related to hazardous materials; basic chemistry knowledge. Knowledge and integrated understanding of the chemical, physical and regulatory aspects associated with hazardous materials and ionizing radiation operations of a large complex institutional facility. Knowledge of all federal, state, local codes and ordinances pertinent to hazardous materials. Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures. Aptitude in technical and mechanical areas. | |
| Basic laboratory skills, intermediate computer skills, project planning skills, organizing resources and establishing priorities. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work well with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. | |
| Follow complex oral and written instructions; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures; communicate technical information to non-technical personnel; work effectively with diverse populations; react calmly and effectively in emergency situations; use radiation survey meters and counters, environmental monitoring equipment; assist with emergency hazardous materials response. | |
| Minimum Qualifications: | |
| Education- Associate's degree in a related field. | |
| Experience- Three (3) years of experience related to the standard duties as outlined. | |
| Equivalency- Any equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience as approved by Human Resource Services. | |
| Certifications/License- Must be able to obtain HAZWOPER certification within 3 months of hire. | |
