| Purpose of Classification: | |
| Under general supervision, performs a variety of technical duties in support of departmental program to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations as well as University policies. Performs technical and support functions for a variety of areas including environmental monitoring, radiation safety, hazardous waste management, industrial hygiene and occupational safety, receiving and distribution of radioactive materials. Assist with management of universal wastes, routine monitoring and sample collection for the local campus. Follows standard operating procedures and prescribed techniques. | |
| Standard Duties: | |
| Assists with chemical, radioactive, infectious and universal waste collection on campus; assists with sorting waste by compatibility type; assists with packaging, labeling, loading of wastes for shipment. Performs direct handling and co-mingling of all types of hazardous wastes requiring use of personal protective equipment; Participates in annual medical monitoring and frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials; position receives 5% premium pay for hazardous duties. Assists with receiving, testing using technical equipment and delivery of radioactive materials packages arriving on campus. Assists with environmental monitoring using technical equipment, performing generator readings, assisting with contamination surveys, assists in analyzing samples using laboratory equipment; reports results of monitoring and testing. Assists with safety monitoring using specialized equipment; assists with technical data for safety certifications, inspections or special projects; assists in operation or response to incidents or spills covering hazardous materials. Assist in decontamination of work areas and may use specialized equipment. | |
| Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: | |
| Knowledge related to hazardous materials; basic chemistry knowledge preferred. Knowledge of the health and physical hazards associated with hazardous materials. Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures. Aptitude in technical and mechanical areas. Must be detail oriented. | |
| Familiar with laboratory hazard, intermediate computer skills, strong organizational skills. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work well with a wide range of constituencies in a a divers community. | |
| Ability to follow complex oral and written instructions; ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations; ability to learn and effectively use technical equipment for monitoring, decontamination, safety and protection; ability to wear respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment. | |
| Minimum Qualifications: | |
| Education- High School Diploma or GED Certificate | |
| Experience- Two (2) years of related experience as outlined in the standard duties. | |
| Equivalency- Completion of a post-secondary degree may substitute for years of experience. | |
| Certifications/License- Must be able to obtain HAZWOPER certification within 6 months of hire. Must pass medical evaluation within 6 months of hire and annually for continued employment. Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement. | |
