Purpose of Classification:
Plans, organizes, oversees, and coordinates the daily activities of a designated operational entity of the police department. Manages supervisory personnel and police officers who provide personal, real property, and equipment security throughout campus, ensuring consistent and equitable enforcement of local, state, and federal laws and university regulations. Reviews and approves reports on incident and crime investigations.
Standard Duties:
Manages a specific operational entity of the police department, such as a patrol shift or the criminal investigation division. Disseminates directives and messages from the command staff to subordinates. Oversees the supervision of personnel which includes work allocation/scheduling, training, promotion and enforcement of internal procedures and controls, and problem resolution. Evaluates employee performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions. Motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance. Reviews police reports to ascertain that information is recorded in conformance with regulations; determines the need for follow-up; determines appropriate distribution throughout the campus community. Supervises and/or manages special events operations. Assists subordinates in performance of duties including responding to routine and emergency calls for assistance as well as general enforcement duties. Reviews cases with subordinates as appropriate, and provides guidance and direction. Coordinates enforcement and/or response efforts with other university departments or outside agencies. Responds to the public and media representatives, both orally and in writing, regarding department activities. Participates as a member of various committees, including departmental hiring and promotion, and may assist in developing and communicating departmental operating procedures. Represents the organization at various community and/or business meetings, committees, and task forces; promotes existing and new programs and/or policies. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of current police department policies and procedures. Knowledge and understanding of standard and NMSU police protocols, procedures, and methodology including use of force principles and the incident command system. Knowledge of New Mexico and federal statutes. Knowledge of management/supervision principles and practices. Knowledge of university policies including faculty and/or staff hiring procedures.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Employee development and performance management skills. Skills in problem analysis and resolution. Sound decision making skills.
Ability to foster a cooperative work environment and motivate subordinates to make decisions which are in the best interests of both the department and the university. Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures. Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, maintaining accurate and orderly records, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments. Ability to make presentations and teach classes.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- Graduation from an accredited law enforcement academy.
   Experience- Four (4) years of experience as a certified police officer with a minimum of two years as a sergeant.
   Equivalency- None
   Certifications/License- State of New Mexico Certified Law Enforcement Officer.
