Purpose of Classification:
Under general supervision, coordinates projects involving hazardous chemical waste and other chemical safety issues within a college. Ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal regulatory agencies and university policies and procedures. Conducts training programs in area of specialty.
Standard Duties:
Inspects college facilities for compliance with environmental health and safety regulations; advises users of the proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials. Coordinates special waste disposal projects including the handling of toxic gases, infectious materials, asbestos, PCBs, hazardous chemicals and mixed waste, including radioactive materials for the college/department. Develops and conducts new employee training programs in the areas of infectious wastes, hazard communication, asbestos, poly-chlorinated biphenyls, and other hazardous substances. Advises management on potential hazardous materials and makes recommendations as required. Maintains records such as hazardous and non-hazardous waste manifests and associated documents. Responds to hazardous materials spills such as oil, acid, and mercury; implements clean-up plan. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of transport and disposal procedures for safe handling of hazardous chemicals and/or radioactive materials. Knowledge of federal, state and local safety regulations, protocols, and/or procedures. Knowledge of transport and disposal procedures for safe handling of toxic gases, infectious materials, asbestos, PCBs, and other hazardous substances. Knowledge of chemical, hazardous waste, industrial hygiene, and/or environmental health standards.
Records maintenance skills. Skill in performing safety inspections and ensuring compliance with OSHA safety standards. Skill in developing and conducting employee information/orientation sessions. Skill in developing safety procedures and protocols.
Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to develop, implement, and enforce safety programs and protocols. Ability to operate, test and/or repair monitoring, sampling and/or analytical equipment and instruments. Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel. Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- Bachelor's degree in a related field.
   Experience- Five (5) years of professional experience related to the standard duties as outlined.
