Purpose of Classification: | |
Directs the daily operations of the Center for Academic Advising and Student Support. Provides leadership for campus- and system-wide academic advising initiatives. Plans and develops strategies for increasing student persistence and timely graduation. Collaborates with campus and system partners to ensure efficient and effective academic advising outcomes. Provides academic advising services to students, prospective students, and former students. Manages professional and administrative staff and student employees. | |
Standard Duties: | |
Provide strategic leadership for the development and enhancement of academic advising structures, policies, and practices that support students in accomplishing their academic, career, and personal goals for enrollment at NMSU. Establish academic advising student learning outcomes and programmatic goals for the Center for Academic Advising and Student Support. Design, establish, and maintain an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the unit’s goals and objectives, anticipating growth due to increased enrollment. Develop, implement, coordinate, and assess advising programs designed to support student academic success and improve persistence and graduation rates. Develop policies and procedures for the effective functioning of academic advising at all levels across the university. Design and deliver training and professional development for unit staff as well as faculty advisors across the university. In collaboration with campus partners, design learning experiences that integrate advising student learning outcomes such as: Orientation content, Learning Communities, First Year Seminar content, and online modules. Foster and maintain effective relationships with campus partners involved in student success initiatives including, but not limited to: Aggie Welcome and Orientation, Housing and Residential Life, Student Engagement, Career Services, and Financial Aid. Foster and maintain effective relationships with academic partners across the university and across the system, such as faculty, associate deans, deans, and registrar. Recommend policies and procedures that facilitate student persistence and graduation. Participate in the development, implementation, and maintenance of enterprise-level advising technologies such as CRM Advise, Banner Advising Module, degree audit, notes systems, and document imaging. Provide feedback to academic programs regarding the identification of academic milestones, curricular barriers, course needs, and the student learning experience. Maintain accurate student records. Monitor the application of transfer credit and make recommendations for improvement of consistency and student-centered application of credit. Develop a comprehensive communication plan that incorporates enterprise-level advising technologies, social media, and other communication tools. Work closely with Institutional Analysis and Student Information Management to gather and analyze data and produce quantitative and qualitative reports related to academic advising, student success, and academic progress. Develop and manage unit budget. Serve on advisory boards and university-appointed committees and task forces such as Regents Student Success Committee, Student Life Committee, Strategic Enrollment Management Council, Aggie Pathways, and Associate Deans Academic Committee. | |
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: | |
Knowledge of academic advising approaches and best practices. Knowledge of theories of students development, students learning, career development, and other related theories. Knowledge of national trends and strategies focused on student persistence and graduation. Understanding of the University's mission, vision and goals. Knowledge and understanding of the institution’s academic policies and procedures. Comprehensive knowledge of the institution’s programs, academic requirements, majors, minors, and other academic offerings. Knowledge of and experience with strategies that contribute to achievement of student learning outcomes. Minimum Qualifications: | |
Education- Master's degree in a related field. | |
Experience- Eight (8) years of increasingly progressive management experience in one or more areas that report to this position. | |
