Purpose of Classification:
Assists the Director with the daily operations of the Center for Academic Advising and Student Support . Supports campus academic advising initiatives. Works with Director to plan and develop strategies for increasing student persistence and timely graduation. Collaborates with campus and system partners to ensure efficient and effective academic advising outcomes. Provides academic advising services to students, prospective students, and former students. Manages professional and administrative staff, graduate assistants, and student employees. Implements initiatives designed to improve student outcomes.
Standard Duties:
Assist Director in providing leadership for the development and enhancement of academic advising structures, policies, and practices that support students in accomplishing their academic, career, and personal goals for enrollment at NMSU. Work with Director to establish academic advising student learning outcomes and programmatic goals for the centralized advising unit. With the Director, develop, implement, coordinate, and assess advising programs designed to support student academic success and improve persistence and graduation rates. Assist to develop policies and procedures for the effective functioning of academic advising at all levels across the university. Design and deliver training and professional development for unit staff as well as faculty liasons/advisors across the university. Manage the Center’s front desk operations. In collaboration with campus partners, facilitate advising participation in programming such as : Orientation , Living Learning Communities, First Year Seminar , QuickConnect and online modules. Foster and maintain effective relationships with campus partners involved in student success initiatives including, but not limited to: Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, Aggie Welcome and Orientation, Housing and Residential Life, Student Engagement, Career Services, and Financial Aid. Represent the advising function in promoting relationships with academic partners across the university and across the system, such as faculty, associate deans, deans, and registrar. Recommend policies and procedures that facilitate student persistence and graduation. Participate in the development, implementation, and maintenance of enterprise-level advising technologies such as CRM Advise, Banner Advising Module, degree audit, notes systems, and document imaging. Provide feedback to academic programs regarding the identification of academic milestones, curricular barriers, course needs, and the student learning experience. Maintain accurate student records. Work closely with Institutional Analysis and Student Information Management to gather and analyze data and produce quantitative and qualitative reports related to academic advising, student success, and academic progress. Manage special projects related to student success as assigned by the Director or the Provost. Serve on advisory boards and university-appointed committees and task forces as needed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of academic advising approaches and best practices. Knowledge of theories of student development, student learning, career development, and other related theories. Knowledge of national trends and strategies focused on student persistence and graduation. Understanding of the University's mission, vision and goals. Knowledge and understanding of the institution’s academic policies and procedures. Comprehensive knowledge of the institution’s programs, academic requirements, majors, minors, and other academic offerings. Knowledge of and experience with strategies that contribute to achievement of student learning outcomes. Knowledge of organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Employee development and performance management skills.
Ability to use technology tools to enhance academic advising delivery and outcomes. Ability to design research, assessment, and evaluation tools
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- Bachelor's degree in a related field.
   Experience- Five (5) years of increasingly progressive management experience in one or more areas that report to this position.
