Purpose of Classification: | |
Investigates, refers, and works to find a resolution to various student concerns and students of concern. Collaborate with departments and colleges to understand the full situation. Follows up with the student to ensure they are fully aware of available resources and appropriate offices. Provides guidance during times of crisis at any of the five campuses. | |
Standard Duties: | |
Serves on the Conduct Assessment Response and Education (CARE) team. Makes contact with students by phone or face-to-face meetings whose names are brought to CARE for review. Learns what problems the student may be facing which could be creating the concerning behavior. Provides information and resources such as counseling, financial assistance, and the food bank as appropriate. Communicates with other departments as needed (such as: NMSU Police, Housing & Residence Life, Counseling, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Office of Institutional Equity and Las Cruces Police Department). Follows up with the student to investigate if the problem persist and monitors for conserving behaviors. Responds to student concerns. Meets with students to learn of their concern. Connects students to the appropriate area of campus so their concern can be addressed immediately. Follows up with the students to ensure a resolution was made. Manages the Student Concern database which is a required element for HLC accreditation. Maintains continuous communication with students via phone, email, and face-to-face meetings. Works with students who are considering to withdrawal from the university. Discusses options with the student so the student can make an informed decision. Works with the student and the Office of Student Records to complete a withdrawal or partial withdrawal. Supports the Conduct Officer by serving as a Hearing Officer. This position will conduct Educational Conference and Hearings with students who are charged with violating the Student Social Code of Conduct. Reports directly to the Dean of Students. Acts in the absence of the Dean of Students. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned. | |
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: | |
Knowledge and practice of student development theory, basic financial aid information, retention factors and legal issues in higher education. An understanding of the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act and Title IX. | |
Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal), including active listening and cultivating meaningful connections with diverse faculty, staff, parent, and community partners. Strong interpersonal, organization and crisis management skills. Ability to remain calm during times of crisis. Computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office and Banner. | |
Ability to recognize and set appropriate boundaries with students, including a focus on connecting students to resources and coaching. Demonstrate the ability to work in a fast paced environment and quickly adapt to changing student needs. Ability to multitask while maintaining organization and thoughtful interactions with colleagues and students. Flexibility to adapt to different crisis. Embodies the ability to maintain composure when faced with crisis and/or high-stress situations. Reserve personal reactions/judgments/opinions. Ability to handle multiple cases and priorities at the same time. Ability to make decisions and work independently and as part of a team. | |
Minimum Qualifications: | |
Education- Bachelor's degree in Student Affairs, Social Work, Counseling or other related discipline | |
Experience- Five (5) years of Professional work experience related to the standard duties as outlined. | |
