Purpose of Classification:
Manages the daily operation of a comprehensive academic advising and career exploration center for a large community college. Plans and develops strategies for academic advising services, transcript evaluation, and academic program alignment. Provides academic consulting services to students, prospective students, and former students. Supervises exempt and non-exempt academic advising staff.
Standard Duties:
Directs activities of a comprehensive undergraduate academic advising and career exploration process that includes advisement, transcript evaluation, academic program alignment, and dual credit and early college high school advisement. Establishes and implements short and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures related to advising; Monitors and evaluates programmatic and operational effectiveness, and implements improvement changes. Resolves problems relating to curriculum, course prerequisites, and eligibility. Reviews transcripts to ensure eligibility for admission to a specific college or program including evaluation of transfer credits and applicability of academic credit to program requirements. May advise on certification or licensure requirements; Responsible for overall process of reviewing student grades, determining and notifying students of probation, suspension and return to regular status when academic regulations are met. Coordinates with other organizational units to resolve academic problems. Reviews student files and transcripts to ensure deadlines are met for completing program and graduation requirements and that student remains on career track. Participates in in-service training and in the development and implementation of advisement programs and material. Assists faculty advisement, and other counseling personnel by providing records, evaluations, interpretations, and other requested data, recommendations, and conclusions. Assists in advisement, admission, certification and evaluation processes by performing supplemental administrative activities, such as securing requested information and verifying computerized data files. May assist in formulating procedures involving the application of academic suspension regulations. Oversees supervision of personnel to include work allocation, training, promotion and enforcement of internal procedures and controls, and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendation for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance. Responsible for the college’s Quick Connect early intervention program. Oversees the college’s dual credit and early college high school advising. Responsible for monitoring and ensuring the college’s web sites related to advising are updated regularly and reflect current practices and procedures. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of academic standards overning student probation, suspension, and/or xpulsion. Knowledge of student recruitment and retention issues. Knowledge of organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures. Knowledge of best practices pertaining to student advising and retention.
Records maintenance skills. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management. Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures. Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities. Skills in goal setting and managing to meet goals. Skills in employee development and employee performance management.
Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to analyze program requirements, university requirements, and/or curriculum/graduation requirements. Ability to analyze and solve problems. Ability to analyze course prerequisites, certification, and/or curriculum/graduation requirements. Ability to evaluate student transcripts and/or records. Ability to develop and implement recruitment plans. Ability to plan community outreach projects. Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments. Ability to communicate and interact with officials at all levels of government. Ability to foster a cooperative work environment. Ability to utilize data to make informed decisions.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- Bachelor's degree in a related field.
   Experience- Five (5) years of professional experience related to the standard duties as outlined.
