Purpose of Classification:
Supervise and direct Veteran Affairs to include assisting VA students in receiving funding; serve as certifying official who is responsible for over $4.5 million in annual stipends to NSMU students; and ensure that VA rules and regulations are followed.
Standard Duties:
Supervise, direct, delegate, and evaluate work of assigned staffServe as the custodian of records and Certifying Official. Conduct meetings and provide University Administration criteria recommendations for compliance issues Assist Registrar's Office with determining course and degree equivalencies. Process sensitive certifications and submit special request to State and Federal offices. Serves as a liaison between NMSU, students, various VA offices and Counselors. Assist with the State Certifying Officials yearly conference and present Veteran Affairs information. Conduct state wide training on state/federal VA processing, file maintenance, and reporting requirements. Verifies enrollment status, reviews all transcripts for previous certification of courses. Monitor student progress, track changes in grades, status and parts of term and curriculum. Interact with Registrar's Office when veterans are called to active duty and assist with withdraw process. Interact with administration on appeal grades to ensure VA program eligibility. Oversee updating of Veterans Program website, literature, and form and ensure information is current. Develop, implement, track, report, and certify policies/procedures in compliance with State/Federal Laws. Perform related duties as required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of VA rules and regulations.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Direct, evaluate, train, and supervise the work of assigned personnel; develop and maintain effective working relationships; maintain accurate and orderly records; use independent judgment and initiative; organize and direct activities; analyze and evaluate information; solve practical problems and deal with variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; write reports, business correspondence training material and procedure manuals; exercise independent judgment and initiative; safeguard confidential information; read and interpret technical procedures and government regulations
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- High School diploma or GED certificate.
   Experience- Four (4) years of experience related to the standard duties as outlined.
   Equivalency- Completion of a post-secondary degree or certificate may substitute for years of experience.
