Purpose of Classification:
Provides professional counseling to students on academic, financial, and personal matters. Provides individual and group therapy and counseling. Responsible for program development and evaluation, and outreach activities. Consults with academic departments and student affairs organizations.
Standard Duties:
Provide individual counseling to students in personal and interpersonal adjustment, academic concerns, and career and life planning. Provides referrals to outside resources. Consults with faculty, staff and others as appropriate to provide an optimum environment for student success. Serves as liaison when providing direct auxiliary aides and performs related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
University and department policies and procedures; principles and practices of organization and administration; counseling theory and techniques, career and academic counseling; crisis intervention and community resources; professional ethics; psychopathology; psychological assessment and consultation; referral resources; and human growth and development.
Problem identification, analysis, and resolution; facilitation of referrals; public contact and relations; short-and long-range planning.
Travel periodically for training and consultation; communicate effectively in written and oral form; develop and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty and staff; report preparation, recognition of when to consult with other professionals; maintain accurate and orderly records; use independent judgment and initiative; organize and direct activities; analyze and evaluate information; direct, evaluate, train and supervise the work of assigned personnel; safeguard confidential and privileged information.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- Master's degree in related field.
   Experience- Must have experience in the provision of therapy and crisis intervention services.
   Equivalency- None
   Certifications/License- Must be Licensed Professional Counselor/Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPC/LPCC), Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), or Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) in the State of New Mexico by date of employment.
