Purpose of Classification:
Lead financial aid advisor of a financial aid advising team, performing integrated financial aid and scholarship advisement and consultation of prospective, current, and former students both undergraduate and graduate university wide. Assesses federal, state and institutional eligibility for financial aid and scholarship programs. Develops academic plans to assist students in maintaining satisfactory academic progress and make professional judgments regarding student statuses. Analyzes financial aid applications and related documents. Maintains appropriate records. Coordinates or performs presentations and workshops across campus and the community. Directs and delegates work of assigned staff, provides leadership and facilitates training.
Standard Duties:
Provides financial aid and scholarship consulting services to students, prospective students, and former students, including complex analysis of documentation in order to resolve problems relating to federal, state and university policies and procedures by utilizing the appropriate resource material or governance manual. Provides procedural interpretation and leadership for 4 -5 exempt staff. Trains and updates financial aid exempt staff regarding procedural changes and works closely with new hires to facilitate training. Responds to complaints and grievances of students and parents. In the absence of the Associate Director, the Lead Advisor conducts the meeting for Appeals committees and makes recommendations regarding the financial aid eligibility of students with mitigating circumstances contributing to unsatisfactory academic progress. Exercises professional judgment to determine if adjustments should be made; makes award adjustments and recalculations as appropriate. Presides over the collection, management and reporting of data in accordance with the objectives of the position; participates in the development and implementation of departmental procedures, as appropriate. Conducts student orientations, entrance and exit interviews in accordance with federal, university and agency guidelines. Reviews loan related financial documents for accuracy and provides signature approval/disapproval. Responds to inquiries by researching and resolving problems related to transactions handled by the department; serves as liaison with other departments in the resolution of day-to-day administrative or operational issues; provides crisis intervention referrals, as appropriate. Coordinates one or more specific administrative programs or service areas, as assigned. Participates in the review and adjudication of appeals for scholarships and academic progress. May oversee activities of staff and/or student support. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures. Knowledge of federal and state laws, regulations, and policies pertaining to the provision of student financial aid. Knowledge of financial aid policies, procedures, and eligibility requirements.
Interviewing skills. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Ability to analyze and solve problems. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to lead and functionally supervise staff. Ability to make evaluative judgments. Ability to present educational programs, workshops and/or orientations.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- Bachelor's degree in a related field.
   Experience- Three (3) years of professional experience directly related to the standard duties as outlined.
