Purpose of Classification:
Under general supervision, plans, conducts and supervises assignments. Reviews progress and evaluates results. Operates with substantial latitude for unreviewed action or decision. Performs an assortment of complex research and development engineering duties such as developing, designing, and evaluating new approaches to meet project objectives, planning of manufacturing and fabrication and the installation, operation, and maintenance of electrical apparatus. Provides support to activities in the use of electrical and mechanical devices for commercial, domestic, and industrial use. Oversees the support efforts of engineers and technical personnel to enhance production, quality and meet customer specifications and requirements. Provides work leadership and training to lower level professional and technical staff. This is the top technical level non-management position.
Standard Duties:
Lead project manager over multiple or high profile projects, which require the use of sophisticated project planning techniques. Independently applies advanced knowledge of scientific research or engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields. Provides strategic planning for the direction of research programs; sets goals and direction, establishes research budgets, approach, methods, protocols, and procedures. Makes decisions independently on technical problems and methods, and represents the project in conferences to resolve important questions, and to plan and coordinate work. Carries out feasibility studies for new technical innovations. Draws up plans and specifications for complex projects, using computer-assisted engineering and design software. Estimates material, and labor costs, and project timelines. May act as internal consultant providing technical guidance on most complex projects. Oversees the supervision of personnel, which includes work allocation, training, enforcement of internal procedures and controls, and problem resolution; promotes, evaluates performance, and makes recommendations for personnel actions. Leads installation and systems development, and analyzes the resultant data making sure projects meet electrical and mechanical requirements. Oversees large system design, development, and test programs. Leads project meetings, writes reports and gives presentations to managers and clients. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge and understanding of engineering principles, procedures, regulations, and standards applicable to the job. Can apply scientific theories and laws and engineering methods used within scientific and engineering disciplines to develop or demonstrate new designs, concepts, materials, machines, products, processes, or systems Understanding of the University’s mission, vision and goals.

Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- Bachelor's degree in Engineering
   Experience- Eight (8) years of professional experience directly related to the standard duties as outlined.
   Equivalency- None
   Certifications/License- Specific certification and/or licensure requirements may exist for individual positions in this classification.
