Purpose of Classification: | |
Under minimal supervision, defines, develops, and administers one or more broadly-based, technical research programs of national and/or international significance for an independently funded and administered research institute/center, established through a partnership of regional and/or national research organizations. Provides technical expertise and direction, and develops and implements program strategies. Conducts independent research and serves as principal investigator on complex, integrated research projects. | |
Standard Duties: | |
Defines, directs, and manages technical research programs of critical interest to the institute; sets priorities and initiates research projects in area of broad professional expertise. Provides strategic planning for the direction of research programs; sets goals and direction, establishes research budgets, workscope, approach, methods, protocols, and procedures. Provides technical leadership and guidance to researchers and investigators, and serves as principal investigator on research projects of broad scope and significance to the institute. Maintains professional contacts with other universities, research bodies, government agencies, and/or professional organizations; promotes and represents the research projects and programs of the institute on a national basis. Coordinates and serves as liaison between the various partners and research principals of the institute in the establishment and execution of research projects and programs. Represents the university to various institutional divisions as well as externally to the media, governmental agencies, prospective funding agencies and individuals, prospective vendors, and/or a range of constituencies within the community at large. Maintains a broad knowledge of current and emerging trends in state-of-the-art technology, systems, and research in area of expertise. Oversees the supervision of personnel, which includes work allocation, training, promotion and enforcement of internal procedures and controls, and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance. Establishes and implements short- and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures; monitors and evaluates programmatic and operational effectiveness, and effects changes required for improvement. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. | |

Knowledge of current and emerging technological, systems, and research trends in area of expertise. Knowledge of research principles, protocol, techniques, and standards within area of expertise. knowledge of faculty and/or staff hiring procedures. | |
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities. Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures. Advanced verbal and written communication skills. Minimum Qualifications: | |
Education- Bachelor's degree in a related field. | |
Experience- Eight (8) years of increasingly progressive management experience in one or more areas that report to this position. | |
