Purpose of Classification:
Under general supervision, provides a variety of technical support services for optoelectronics and semiconductor research and related activities. Tests, repairs, maintains and modifies research and facilities equipment including vacuum, mechanical, electrical, chemical and/or cryogenic systems.
Standard Duties:
Produces preliminary sketches and final designs of various devices and prototypes by use of computer-aided drafting software based on research center needs. Fabricates prototypes and other devices related to optoelectronics research using various hand, power, and machine tools; modifies existing equipment and devices to meet changing research requirements. Assists in the operation and maintenance of the clean room and associated semiconductor tools and equipment ensuring adherence to process standards and established clean room practice. Trains and advises staff and students in experimental design, product and material selection, research equipment capacity and utilization, and clean room semiconductor tool operation and processes. Maintains a broad knowledge of state-of-the-art research techniques, technology, equipment and systems related to optoelectronics research. Maintains various inventories of facilities and research parts and supplies and associated hardware; maintains a library of operating manuals and other technical documentation for the research center. Assists in maintenance and monitoring of facilities and equipment including building automation system, HVAC equipment, ultrapure water system, acid waste neutralization system, compressed dry air system, building regular and scrubbed exhaust, alarms and various plumbing and piping systems as required to support building operation and research activities. Assists with facilities management including planning, scheduling, and monitoring work being performed by contractors and physical plant employees within area of responsibility. Maintains safety systems and related supplies and equipment, instructs staff and students in their usage, and assists in workplace safety training. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of computer-aided drafting and design systems. Knowledge of engineering and/or scientific research principles, practices, and protocols. Knowledge of microelectronic cleanliness and quality standards. Knowledge of operation, repair, and troubleshooting of various high vacuum and other technical pieces of equipment. Working knowledge of various semiconductor tools and processes.
Organizing and coordinating skills. Skill in the use of computer spreadsheet and/or database applications in the compilation of research data.
Ability to assemble, repair, and modify scientific equipment. Ability to perform basic electrical and mechanical operations. Ability to perform preventative maintenance according to published guidelines and industry standards. Ability to read schematics, engineering drawings, and technical manuals. Ability to read, understand, follow and enforce life safety codes, industrial health standards, and environmental standards and procedures. Ability to supervise students and contractors and coordinate projects of varying complexity. Ability to troubleshoot technical equipment and problem-solve complex projects. Ability to use and operate a variety of hand, power, and machine tools to machine complex prototype laboratory devices from a variety of materials.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- High School diploma or GED certificate.
   Experience- Three (3) years of experience related to the standard duties as outlined.
   Equivalency- Completion of a post-secondary degree or certificate may substitute for years of experience.
