Purpose of Classification:
Lays out, builds, tests, troubleshoots, repairs, designs, and modifies developmental and production parts, equipment, and systems. Applies principles and theories of engineering mathematics, and physics.
Standard Duties:
Devise, fabricate, and assemble new or modified mechanical components for products such as industrial machinery or equipment, and measuring instruments. Assembles experimental or complete prototype models according to engineering instructions, technical manuals, and knowledge of systems and components. Discusses layout and assembly procedures and problems with engineers, researchers, or other professionals. Recommends changes or installation specifications to simplify assembly and maintenance. Sets up standard or complex test apparatus or devises test equipment to conduct functional, operational, environmental, and life tests to evaluate performance and reliability of prototype or production models. Performs hardware and software maintenance and assists in proper upkeep and utilization of systems. Analyzes and interprets test data. Adjusts, calibrates, aligns, and modifies parts and components and records effects on unit performance. Review project instructions and blueprints to ascertain test specifications, procedures, and objectives, and test nature of technical problems. Record test procedures and results, numerical and graphical data, and recommendations for changes in product or test methods. Maintains technical documentation; writes technical reports and develops charts, graphs, and schematics. May operate drill press, grinders, engine lathe, or other machines to modify parts tested or to fabricate experimental parts for testing. May check functioning of newly installed equipment to evaluate system performance under actual operating conditions. May supervise lab experiments; oversee the supervision of technical personnel to include; work allocation, training, promotion and enforcement of internal procedures and controls and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance. May maintain inventory of components, parts and supplies; Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance. Knowledge of the practical application of science and technology. Knowledge of mechanical layouts, components and mechanical assembly procedures. Knowledge of computer aided design software. Knowledge of laboratory operations and/or procedures.
Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems. Records maintenance skills.
Ability to prepare field drawings of design proposals. Ability to perform preventive maintenance on hardware, machines, or equipment. Ability to write reports containing technical information. Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- Vocational/Technical certificate or an associate's degree.
   Experience- Five (5) years of experience directly related to the standard duties as outlined.
