Purpose of Classification:
Under direct supervision, assist in the process to provide basic mechanical technical support to engineering, or manufacturing in the fabrication, repair & design of of processes, products, or equipment. Assists in the layout, fabrication building, testing, troubleshooting, repairing, designing, and modification of developmental and production parts, equipment, and systems. Use of fabrication machines and interpreting engineering blueprints under the supervision of Intermediate or Sr. Mechanical Technician, Engineer or Project manager.
Standard Duties:
Under direct supervision, assist in fabrication and assembly of new or modified mechanical components for products such as industrial machinery or equipment, and measuring instruments. Assemble experimental or complete prototype models according to engineering instructions, technical manuals, and knowledge of systems and components. Assist in the layout and assembly procedures as provided by engineers, researchers or other professionals. Follow instructions on changes or installation specifications for assembly and maintenance. Set up standard test equipment to conduct functional, operational, environmental, and life tests to evaluate performance and reliability of prototype or production models. Review project instructions and drawings/blueprints to ascertain test specifications, procedures, and objectives and nature of technical problems. Maintain technical documentation. May operate fabricating machines such as drill press, grinder, engine lathe, shaper, milling machines or other machines to modify existing parts or to fabricate experimental parts for testing. May gauge work carefully by using precision measurement tools while under supervision from senior staff members. May check functionality of newly installed equipment to evaluate system performance under actual operating conditions. Perform other miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of various machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance. Knowledge of mechanical layouts, components and mechanical assembly procedures. Knowledge of computer aided design software. Knowledge of laboratory operations and/or procedures
Basic mechanical fabrication and records maintenance skills.
Ability to assist in the preventive maintenance of hardware, machines or equipment. Ability to read and follow technical instructions and manuals. Ability to perform preventive maintenance on hardware, machines, or equipment. Ability to read and follow technical instructions and manuals. Ability to communicate with and understand the requirements of professional staff in area of specialty. Ability to make adjustments and modifications to hardware, machines or equipment.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- High School diploma or GED certificate.
   Experience- Two (2) years of experience related to the standard duties as outlined.
   Equivalency- Completion of a post-secondary degree or certificate may substitute for years of experience.
   Certifications/License- May require ability to pass NASA training for soldering techniques and become certified per NASA STD-8739.3.
