Purpose of Classification:
Collect and test samples to monitor contamination of humans, facilities, and the environment. Analyze many types of work environments and work procedures for CEMRC. Inspect workplaces for adherence to regulations on safety, health, and the environment. Design programs to prevent disease or injury to workers and to minimize damage to the environment.
Standard Duties:
Calculate safe radiation exposure levels for personnel by using facility contamination readings and by following prescribed safe levels of radiation in accordance with established guidelines. Monitor personnel to determine the dose and types of radiation exposure received. Oversee Field Programs group at the CEMRC which includes the collection and preparation of environmental samples for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant Environmental Monitoring (WIPP-EM) program. Serve as the radiation safety specialist for the CEMRC, working under close supervision and guidance from the NMSU Radiation Safety Officer (RSO). Survey CEMRC laboratories on a routine basis to ensure that they are clean and free of contamination; assist with the cleanup and decontamination activities associated with radiation spills; oversee the collection, storage, and disposal of radioactive wastes at the CEMRC, assist with the shipping and receiving of radioactive materials; and maintain and calibrate radiation safety and survey equipment. Will serve as the backup to the Internal Dosimetry lab group and/or the Facility Services group during times of illness, annual leave, or vacancies.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions. Extensive knowledge of safety standards and complex government regulations. Knowledge of current technological developments/trends in area of expertise. Knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo. This includes uses of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods. Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
Ability to communicate safety instructions and concerns to employees and managers. Work with scientific and/or technical staff to collect and test samples of possible hazards, such as radiologically contaminated dust or vapors, in the workplace. Employ effective organizational and interpersonal skills including written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrate a strong sense of urgency through prioritizing and following through on commitments. Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems. Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
Ability to use advanced technology to include working with complex testing equipment. Ability to solve problems in order to design and implement workplace processes and procedures that help protect workers from hazardous work conditions. Must be able to interpret complex documents and formulate an opinion. The ability to apply general rules to specific problems and produce a solution. Must be able to effectively supervise and train others. Ability to multi-task.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
   Experience- Five (5) years of professional experience directly related to the standard duties as outlined.
