Purpose of Classification:
Under limited supervision, provides oversight and coordination of all aspects of the costume shop as well as the instructional labs integrated into the shop. May supervise employees and students. May need to troubleshoot hardware and software. May conduct or schedule preventative maintenance and repair of all equipment and tools. Responsible for maintaining inventories of equipment, tools, chemicals and supplies, with procurement authority.
Standard Duties:
In conjunction with production designers, plans and coordinates the day-to-day activities of the costume shop, including budgeting, management, training, supervision, and scheduling. Monitors and maintains quality of costume shop operations and performance of students (or staff) in compliance with accreditation standards, safety and environmental regulations, and other applicable requirements. Work collaboratively in preparation for performances. Assist faculty in the individualized instruction of students in the shop; assure student safety; may instruct classes in make-up or other areas of specialty; Perform/schedule preventative maintenance/repair of equipment within program of study; Assure all equipment is working prior to use; Train/supervise student employees in their job responsibilities and how to safely conduct themselves in the shop; Inventory equipment and supplies; Order inventory, chemicals, equipment, media and supplies; Maintain Material Safety Data Sheets as needed/required. Demonstrate to students processes/skills to support theatre productions; Grade student assignments, quizzes, and exams as required; Maintain database of student's grades; May be provided the opportunity for production design in costumes, hair, and/or make-up; Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of all facets of costume creation including patterning, stitching, millinery, tailoring, dyeing, and ageing; and basic cobbler; stage makeup; wig maintenance; basic accounting; principles and practices of organization and administration; Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.
Skill in designing patterns, cutting, sewing, dying and fitting costumes. Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.
Ability to supervise, advise, and train clinical professionals and/or students in area of expertise. Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments. Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures. Ability to supervise and train employees/students, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments. Ability to foster a cooperative work environment. Ability to identify and resolve technical problems. Ability to monitor and/or maintain quality control standards. Ability to gather and analyze data and generate reports.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- B.A., (emphasis in Theatre preferred)
