Purpose of Classification:
Directs and oversees all operational, administrative, and programmatic aspects of the NMSU Art Museum and gallery.
Standard Duties:
Establishes and implements short- and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures; monitors and evaluates programmatic and operational effectiveness, and effects changes required for improvement. Designs, establishes, and maintains an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the organization's goals and objectives; oversees recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of unit staff. Plans, develops, and implements strategies for generating resources and/or revenues for the organization. Develops and manages annual budgets for the organization and performs periodic cost and productivity analyses. Coordinates staff participation in educational activities. Directs and oversees the acquisition and professional management of a wide range of art objects; directs and oversees accessioning, deaccessioning, preservation, research, and other related professional activities. Oversees and coordinates a wide variety of temporary exhibitions and permanent collection installations; directs and guides all aspects of research interpretation, cataloging, and presentation related to the establishment of exhibitions. Plans, coordinates, and oversees the unit's public affairs and oversees communications efforts, to include public relations, community outreach, and internal publications and communications, as appropriate. Represents the art museum through leadership on various committees; sits on teaching and thesis/dissertation committees, as appropriate. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge and understanding of all aspects of art appreciation and art history. Knowledge and understanding of a wide range of art formats, disciplines, techniques, and media. Knowledge of financial/business analysis techniques. Knowledge of art acquisition and management principles, methods, procedures, and standards. Knowledge of faculty and/or staff hiring procedures.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management. Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities. Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures. Employee development and performance management skills.
Ability to identify and secure alternative funding/revenue sources. Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments. Ability to foster a cooperative work environment. Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate temporary and permanent art exhibitions.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- Master's degree in a related field.
   Experience- Five (5) years of professional experience directly related to the standard duties as outlined.
