Purpose of Classification: | |
Responsible for directing the activities of the animal care unit. Assists in surgery and performs pre and post-operative care as directed. Ensures maintenance of and adherence to standard operating procedures and protocols. Trains employees in proper lab techniques. Maintains quality checks and cleanliness of labs and animal rooms. Ensures care and maintenance of animals in the facility according to GLPs. Supervises animal care and surgical techniques. | |
Standard Duties: | |
Performs on-site regulatory and compliance reviews of facilities and procedures used for animal research, education, and testing; inspects, assesses, and reports on suitability of facilities, appropriateness of protocols and procedures, and training of applicable staff. Coordinates and participates in the development and implementation of annual training programs for faculty, staff, and students involved in the use of animals for research, education, and/or testing; conducts skills assessments in the appropriate use, handling, and maintenance of laboratory animals. Participates in the design and development of a comprehensive monitoring and education program designed to ensure compliance with appropriate regulations, policies, procedures and best practices among all University teaching components involved in the use of animals. Regularly researches and analyzes Federal, State, and local regulations and guidelines pertaining care and use of animals in research, training, and testing; reports changes and developments to management.Oversees the supervision of personnel which includes: work allocation, training,promotion and enforcement of internal procedures and controls and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. | |
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: | |
Current knowledge and understanding of Federal, State, and local laws, regulations, and standards for the ethical and humane treatment of animals in research, education, and testing. Knowledge of animal husbandry and the biology of common animal species. Knowledge of electronic communications applications, including the internet. | |
Program planning and implementation skills. Research, analytical, and critical thinking skills. Skill in the application of anesthetic, surgical, and related procedures and techniques to animals used in research, education, and testing. Skill in the use of computers, to include proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, and database software. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. | |
Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials. Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops. Ability to relay technical information to both technical and non-technical personnel. | |
Minimum Qualifications: | |
Education- Bachelor's degree in a related field. | |
Experience- Five (5) years of professional experience related to the standard duties as outlined. | |
