Purpose of Classification:
Under general supervision works with the optical fibers and cables used in transmitting communication data at a site or organizational location. Technicians splice and fuse fibers, install cables in the different parts of structures, so that these could be used for telecommunications and/or other forms of communication. May train, assign and check the work of lower level employees. This position is instrumental to communications ensuring high-speed, high definition service.
Standard Duties:
Prepares, installs, and tests fiber optics transmission systems. May be required to install lines for local area networks. Evaluate areas where fiber optic cable will be installed and run cable from the computer's mainframe to individual workstations. Test the cable, using power meters and other devices, by running a laser through it. Assemble product from prints, drawings, and internal specifications. Use equipment that measures the amount of time it takes for the laser to go through, determining any signal loss or faults in the fiber link. Fuse fibers together; clean fiber and cut with a special diamond-headed cleaver. Fuse fibers using fusion splicer. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of materials needed for jobsite.
Ability to hold hand steady with good eyesight in assembling fiber optic cables. Demonstrated ability to operate wire/cable assembly equipment.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- High School diploma or GED certificate.
   Experience- Two (2) years of experience related to the standard duties as outlined.
