Purpose of Classification:
Designs and installs telescopes and performs instrument preparations, troubleshooting and repair. Plans and conducts tests, monitors trends and corrects anomalies. Implements corrections as needed. May train or supervise technical staff.
Standard Duties:
Completes design, generates contracts for fabrication, and conducts installation and testing of various electro-, opto-, mechanical systems for complex telescope systems, including interfaces to instrumentation. Plans and conducts tests, monitors trends and corrects anomalies. Performs troubleshooting and problem analysis. Provides engineering drawings, schematics, firmware, and operator instructions. Specifies procedures, schedules, spares lists for maintenance and repair of telescope systems. Specifies, procures, maintains specialized mechanical, electronics, and optical test and maintenance equipment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
University and department policies and procedures; principles and practices of organization and administration; mechanical design including material selection, adhesives, vacuum systems, structural analysis, digital controls, statistics, thermo dynamics, dynamics and machining; astronomical telescopes, including mechanical driven systems and control servos; optical coatings, general analog and digital electronics, thermal measurement; CAD mechanical design; cryogenics and vacuum systems; fiber optics; writing and organization of drawings and other system documents.
Short- and long-range planning; problem analysis and resolution; report preparation and presentation; public contact and relations; oral and written communication.
Direct, evaluate, train, and supervise the work of assigned personnel; develop and maintain effective working relationships; maintain accurate and orderly records; use independent judgment and initiative; organize and direct activities; analyze and evaluate information.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- Bachelor's degree in a related field.
   Experience- Three (3) years of experience related to the standard duties as outlined.
   Equivalency- Any equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience as approved by Human Resource Services.
