Purpose of Classification:
An accomplished and experienced professional researcher, funded from restricted funding sources, who conducts significant original research, or serves as a senior collaborator on a multi-scholar research initiative, typically leading substantive aspects of the overall project under the general guidance of a principal researcher. May serve as a co-investigator on a funded research project.
Standard Duties:
Principle researcher that develops, designs and conducts complex research activities for one or more midsize to large research projects. Applies diversified knowledge of scientific research principles, practices, and protocols in research projects; is responsible for final recommendations and conclusions which serve as the basis for decision making in a specialty area. Reviews progress and evaluate results, formulate research methods and suggest options for improving quality, identify potential problems, recommends and implements solutions, and coordinates data collection and screening and verification of data. Prepares analyses, reports, and other documentation for publication; presents findings at local, national, and/or international meetings. May provide supervision of graduate students, undergraduate students, and technical staff.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of current technological developments/trends in area of expertise. Comprehensive knowledge of engineering, scientific, and/or mathematical concepts and theories in area of specialty. Knowledge of scientific approach and methodologies. Knowledge of contracts and grants preparation and management. Knowledge of engineering and/or scientific research principles, practices, and protocols. Knowledge of management principles and practices.
Skills in short- and long-range planning; problem analysis and resolution; report preparation and presentation; public contact and relations; oral and written communication; literature reviews and compilation; material development for scientific and non-scientific audiences; grant writing and peer reviewed publications; modification of existing models or development of new models. The applicant may be responsible for, but not limited to, assisting in technical and outreach support in the department and organizing outreach events and conferences addressing activities associated with the research project. Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
Ability to develop and deliver presentations. Ability to develop scientific reports and manuscripts based on original research. Ability to design, organize and coordinate scientific and/or engineering research projects. Ability to use independent judgment to develop model concepts and approaches for research. Ability to plan, develop and manage highly influential and/or groundbreaking research projects in area of expertise. Ability to conduct systematic analysis and develop solutions to complex scientific and/or engineering problems. Ability to utilize advanced computer statistical and technical applications. Ability to plan, develop and coordinate multiple projects.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- Terminal degree in a related field.
   Experience- Three (3) years of professional experience directly related to the standard duties as outlined.
