| Purpose of Classification: | |
| Performs laboratory work involving physical measurement of mass, volume (gravimetrically and volume transfer) and other related measurements including the proper care and handling of measurement standards and the use of sensitive instruments. Calibrates a wide range of equipment used as measurement standards. Works under close supervision by Program Manager or Senior Metrologist. | |
| Standard Duties: | |
| Assists in inspection, repair, adjustment and calibration of field weighing and measuring devices used by the State Officials and Registered Repair Establishments to maintain conformity to standards and regulations enforced by State law; Calibrates a wide range of equipment used as measurement standards; Sets up experiments to conduct measurement studies, to develop measurement procedures or to determine the effects of environmental change on measurement techniques and devices; Participates in Inter-laboratory comparisons with other State Laboratories and performs required National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and National Voluntary Laboratory Auditing Program (NVLAP); Assists in maintaining the Laboratory's Quality System; Supports maintenance of the State laboratory according to NIST procedures and practices; Assists in prototype calibrations and in testing devices not typically encountered in commercial weights and measures; Assists the laboratory program manager in implementing policies and procedures for laboratory operations and in selecting new equipment for the laboratory; Assists in preparing required reports, calibration certificates, and client billings; Writes reports for routine tests conducted in the laboratory; May travel throughout the State and must travel to other states annually to participate in the Regional Measurement Assurance Training and laboratory certification programs conducted by NIST; Perform mass and volume (gravimetric & volume transfer) measurements at the Echelon II & III level with little or no supervision. May be be assigned as trainer to associate metrologist; Enter check standard values in the appropriate charts; Determine if data points are in control; report preparation and presentation; Assume the duties of Quality manager of the laboratory. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. | |
| Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: | |
| Knowledge of algebra, geometry and physics as they relate to measuring mass, volume, length and temperature; Knowledge of laws and regulations applicable to primary and secondary standards of measurements; Knowledge of metrology laboratory procedures; Knowledge of procedures and techniques used in calibrating and testing measurement devices; Knowledge of the characteristics, functions and use of standard weighing and measuring devices; | |

| Ability to communicate effectively and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental staff, the general public and industry representatives. | Minimum Qualifications: | |
| Education- Bachelor's degree in a related field. | |
| Experience- Two (2) years of experience directly related to the standard duties as outlined. | |
| Equivalency- Any equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience as approved by Human Resource Services. | |
| Certifications/License- Successful completion of the basic math test from NIST Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Metrology, Mass Metrology, and Volume Metrology Seminars and their associated Laboratory Auditing Program problems within two years of hire. | |
