Purpose of Classification:
Under general supervision, independently performs a wide range of routine to complex laboratory tests, procedures, experiments, and analyses to provide data for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. May specialize in areas such as hematology, serology, immunohematology, bacteriology, molecular biology, parasitology, virology, histology, chemistry, etc.
Standard Duties:
Conduct laboratory analyses of biological specimens to determine the presence of normal and/or abnormal components. Validates, calculates, and tabulates results of tests performed, posts findings to log book and quality control records, and makes reports and observations. Assists laboratory staff in the interpretation of test results and with the selection of additional tests as appropriate; serves as resource to staff and clients regarding questions and concerns pertaining to clinical testing protocols, procedures, and results. Performs quality control to ensure proper functioning of instruments, reagents, and procedures. Aides in establishing and implementing procedures to evaluate laboratory test methodologies for accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and normal values. Researches and investigates problems with clinical laboratory procedures, and assists with modifications and corrections as appropriate. Orients, mentors, and teaches clinical laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques to new staff, students, and/or residents as appropriate. May lead, guide, and train staff/student employees, interns, and/or volunteers performing related work. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of: university and department policies and procedures; livestock and agricultural sector in New Mexico and the United States; principles of scientific investigation; state and federal laws and regulations. Knowledge of laboratory protocols and procedures. Knowledge of sterile procedures. Knowledge of diagnostic or research laboratory is highly desirable.
Skill in: Short- and long-range planning; problem analysis and resolution; report preparation and presentation; public contact and relations; research methods; Good Laboratory Practices; quality assurance. Records maintenance skills. Skills in the use of personal computers and related software applications
Ability to:Direct, evaluate, train, and supervise the work of assigned personnel; communicate effectively in written and oral form; develop and maintain effective working relationships; maintain accurate and orderly records; use independent judgment and initiative; organize and direct several activities; analyze and evaluate information; operate a computer. To perform complex, advanced clinical procedures. Ability to monitor and/or maintain quality control standards. Ability to perform a range of clinical laboratory tests and chemical analyses on biological samples. Ability to analyze, verify and manipulate clinical and/or laboratory data. Ability to provide technical guidance, leadership, and instruction to student and lower level professional staff within area of expertise. Ability to independently assess clinical tests results and recommend appropriate additional tests and procedures to staff. Ability to identify and evaluate clinical testing problems and to effect corrective procedures and modifications. Ability to work within a Quality Management System.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
   Experience- One year professional experience
