Purpose of Classification: | |
The Director/Secretary provides leadership for the effective and efficient management of the State of New Mexico Department of Agriculture. The Director/Secretary is responsible for the development, administration, and implementation of the department's mission. The Director/Secretary is appointed by the New Mexico State University Board of Regents and is a member of the Governor of New Mexico's executive cabinet. | |
Standard Duties: | |
Provide strategic management and direction for New Mexico Department of Agriculture priorities. Provide leadership to protect, enhance, and develop the sustainability of New Mexico's agriculture industry. Provide consumer protection and education through departmental programs. Serve as the leader, administrator, and evaluator of the New Mexico Department of Agriculture programs and service delivery to the agriculture industry and consumers. Develop and administer overall departmental budget. Serve on President's cabinet and the Governor's cabinet. Reports directly to the President of the University and the Governor of New Mexico. | |
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: | |
Experience in natural resources including land, water, environmental and food safety issues. University policies and procedures; the substantive nature of agency programs, state and federal regulatory processes and statutes; agency mission, policies, and objectives; management principles and processes; analytical and evaluative methods and techniques for assessing program development, execution, and improving organizational effectiveness and efficiency; experience in budgetary and financial management principles and techniques as they relate to long range planning of agency programs. | |
Demonstrated skill in working across agencies to achieve collective missions; skilled in overall agency problem analysis and resolution. | |
Communicate complex information succinctly to diverse audiences and interest groups; ability to liaise with high-level policy makers at the state and federal level; ability to manage agency mission, resources, and personnel with integrity and fairness; ability to manage the unique demands of the dual role played in the university community and the governor's cabinet. | |
Minimum Qualifications: | |
Education- Bachelor's degree in a related field. | |
Experience- Ten (10) years of increasingly progressive management experience in one or more areas that report to this position. | |
