Purpose of Classification:
Performs extremely complex and specialized work related to a diverse histology laboratory in a veterinary diagnostic facility.
Standard Duties:
Preparation of routine histological slides from clinical material. Responsible for a wide range of techniques in the histology laboratory, including the development and implementation of immunohistochemical techniques. Functions as supervisor of histology laboratory. Trains other personnel in the conductance of histology techniques. Responsible for data entry of necropsy and surgical biopsy case information into the Laboratory Information Management System. Monitors histology laboratory inventory and requisitions supplies as required. Sets up and operates all histology laboratory instrumentation and other equipment; assists laboratory director in evaluating and requisitioning new equipment as needed. Maintains quality assurance/quality control program for the histology laboratory under the direction of the Quality Manager. Maintains equipment maintenance records, wet tissue inventory, and archival of histological specimens (blocks, slides, etc.). May be asked to assist in necropsy procedures and perform related work as required. Prepares slides for research and laboratory participation in professional conferences. Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of: specialized knowledge of practices and procedures and quality control applicable to the area of histology
Skill in: considerable skill in the use of all common and specialized equipment involved in the performance of histopathological techniques; advanced computer usage; personnel management
Ability to: assemble and record accurate data; make sound judgments relative to complex and routine processes; be detail oriented in performances of duties; prepare and maintain operational records; communicate effectively verbally and in writing to organize the sequencing and timing of work in area assigned; operate and maintain laboratory equipment; follows oral and extremely complex written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other organizations, and the public; supervise activities of assigned personnel
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- Bachelor's degree in a related field.
   Experience- Five (5) years of experience directly related to the standard duties as outlined.
   Equivalency- Any equivalent combination of education and experience as approved by Human Resource Services
