Purpose of Classification:
Performs complex and specialized work related to a necropsy facility and ancillary laboratory activities in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory.
Standard Duties:
Manages specimen receiving and shipping section. Assists in necropsy procedures and maintains necropsy area equipment and expendable inventory. Conducts histology sample cut-in and functions as emergency backup in histology laboratory as needed. Prepares microbiology samples, performs inoculation procedures and routing as needed and directed by pathologists. Performs various serologic techniques and functions as backup to assist serologist/virologist as needed. Conducts parasitology examinations. Distributes samples to appropriate in-house and referral laboratories. May instruct and oversee the activities of staff performing the same type of work assigned to these areas. Maintains all responsibilities within quality assurance program. Performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of: data collection and recordkeeping procedures; basic veterinary anatomy; medical terminology; Good Laboratory Practices; quality assurance principles
Skill in: advanced computer usage; public contact and relations; excellent organizational skills
Ability to: follow and give verbal and written instructions; understand diagnostic laboratory objectives including quality management system; work effectively under pressure; establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisory personnel, peers, aides, trainees, and laboratory staff; demonstrate a high level of technical competence, judgment, and leadership; be detail oriented in performances of duties; effectively instruct subordinate personnel; operate and maintain clinical equipment.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- High school diploma or GED.
   Experience- Four (4) years of experience related to the standard duties as outlined.
   Equivalency- An Associate's degree in a related field may substitute for two (2) years of experience. A Bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for four (4) years of experience.
   Certifications/License- Must be able to become certified in specific procedures as assigned.
