Purpose of Classification:
Under general supervision, responsible for inspection, grading, and sampling of USDA commodity grades in a variety of agricultural areas to determine compliance with federal and state laws and regulations relating to standards of quality, and quantity of agriculture and other commodities.
Standard Duties:
This is an entry level classification which requires a fundamental knowledge of the primary types and general characteristics of products of the relevant commodity group to perform grading, sampling and/or inspection. Assignments are simple and routine in nature and are further developed through formal training courses and on-the-job training. At this level the scope, variety, and difficulty of assignments gradually increase. The grader learns each successive part of the work and displays greater knowledge of grading principles, standards, and regulations, increased skill in identifying and describing product defects, and/or skill and knowledge in inspecting facilities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
University and Department policies and procedures; fruits, vegetables, and nut sector in New Mexico and the United States; state and federal laws and regulations, principles and practices of organization and administration.
Agricultural commodity Skilled in applying grading principles, procedures, and regulations to identify, describe, and evaluate relevant quality characteristics such as color, taste, smell, physical shape, or type and origin of defect, and to compare the product characteristics with the standard. Various manual skills in handling, testing, or evaluating products.
Develop and maintain effective working relationships; maintain accurate and orderly records; use independent judgment and initiative; organize and direct activities.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- High School diploma or GED certificate.
   Experience- No previous work experience required.
   Equivalency- None.
   Certifications/License- Must be federally licensed in one or more commodities by the completion of probationary period.
