Purpose of Classification:
The employee in this classification ensures, through accurate analyses, that products sold in the state meet minimum standards for New Mexico. Working under close supervision, requires the employee to perform the analysis and reporting of products. Works under close supervision by Intermediate and Senior Chemist or Assistant Division Director.
Standard Duties:
The daily operation, maintenance, and minor repair of laboratory instruments. Assuring accurate, timely analyses of samples and maintain accurate, orderly records of samples analyzed. Minor maintenance and repair of analytical instruments is performed. The employee must have sound judgment and assume the responsibility for the completion of routine tests using standards prescribed by official state standards. Responsible for keeping accurate test results. May assist in the training of student trainees. Handles evidence samples and maintains chain of custody paperwork. May testify in court. Help maintain quality control and quality assurance programs for instruments and laboratory. Enters data accurately into computer databases and spreadsheets. Generates reports for service sample providers, consumers, and program coordinators. Performs other necessary duties as required/assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Elementary knowledge of analytical instrumentation,
Short- and long-term planning; problem analysis and resolution; report preparation and presentation; interpersonal and organizational communication, both oral and written.
Ability to make detailed inspection of, and operate analytical instruments.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- Bachelor's degree in a related field.
   Experience- No previous experience required.
   Equivalency- An Associate's degree in a related field plus two (2) years of directly related experience may substitute for the Bachelor's degree.
