Purpose of Classification:
To begin learning the process of setting up and operating metal fabrication machines and interpreting engineering blueprints under the supervision of Sr. Machinist or Project manager.
Standard Duties:
To begin fabricating a wide variety of metal components through the set up and operation of lathes, shapers, milling machines, drill presses and similar equipment gauging work carefully by using precision measurement tools while under supervision from senior staff members. Repairs and maintains machine shop equipment; repairs precision instruments, stokers, gear boxes, air compressors and pumps. Replaces shafts, bearings, bushings, belts, shear pins, pulleys and gears. Fabricates and repairs scientific research equipment, prototypes and mechanical equipment. Repairs and maintains machine shop equipment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of elementary math and cursory knowledge of trigonometry is preferred but not required, and general computer knowledge.
Ability to use simple hand tools.
Minimum Qualifications:
   Education- High School diploma or GED certificate.
   Experience- No previous work experience required.
   Equivalency- Any equivalent combination of education and experience as approved by Human Resource Services.
