On April 23, the Department of Labor (DOL) announced proposed updates to the compensation threshold under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), which is a key factor in determining overtime eligibility for certain positions. The DOL's announcement details a two-step plan to raise the minimum annual salary threshold, beginning with an initial increase on July 1, 2024, followed by a second adjustment on January 1, 2025.

Minimum Thresholds at Publication Date of this Memo

  • $684 weekly
  • $35,568 annually

July 1, 2024, Minimum Thresholds

  • $844 weekly
  • $43,888 annually

Jan. 1, 2025, Minimum Thresholds

  • $1,128 weekly
  • $58,656 annually

Due to these changes, New Mexico State University employees in salaried positions earning below the new thresholds may be reclassified to hourly status. Human Resources will reach out directly to affected employees and their supervisors to offer guidance. Units with specific questions are encouraged to reach out to their  HR Team Partners for assistance.
